People have realized the great value of rare ginsenosides for a long time, but rare ginsenosides are very difficult to obtain for two main reasons: 1). Rare ginsenoside contents in Araliaceae ginseng species are almost undetectable, even after heat processing, the extraction rate of ginsenosides reaches only 1/100000 - 1/10000; 2). Rare ginsenosides cannot be made in large quantities through industrialized preparation, due to high cost of the raw materials and immaturity of the preparation methodologies.

ginsenosides in their natural-occurring forms (prototype ginsenosides R1, Ra1, Ra2, Ra3, Rb1, Rb2, Rb3, Rc, Rd, Rg1 etc.), cannot be directly absorbed into human body. They must first undergo proper gastrointestinal metabolism and be converted into rare ginsenosides, before effective absorption could take place.
